STRECKER Wants to Become a Carbon Pioneer in the Manufacturing Industry

AUGUST STRECKER is an internationally active, dynamic family business with over 80 employees, based in Limburg an der Lahn in Germany. Founded in 1933, the company is the first point of contact for individual complete solutions in welding technology. STRECKER focuses on the development and production of high-quality wire butt welding machines and also offers a comprehensive range of services. STRECKER is one of the market and technology leaders in this segment worldwide, with sales channels in more than 60 countries.

As part of its own sustainability efforts, the company works with Planetly to gain transparency about its carbon emissions and to identify effective actions to reduce them over time.

Background & Objectives

STRECKER has recognised that their customers' employees want to live healthier and more sustainably, and that they consider environmental protection to be very important. Once they became aware that this will also be reflected in their customers' industrial supply chains in the short term, STRECKER decided to take action.

By partnering up with Planetly, they want to lead the way and show that the German mechanical and plant engineering industry is also actively working on avoiding CO2 emissions.

STRECKER's Carbon Footprint

To calculate the carbon footprint, we took a closer look at all relevant activities across STRECKER’s operations. This includes not only direct and energy-related emissions (Scope 1 & 2) but also indirect emissions caused by purchased goods and services and other emissions that occur outside the organisation (Scope 3).

The various types of emissions are calculated in CO2 equivalents (short: CO2e) to make them addable and comparable. Adding up all emissions, STRECKER had a footprint of 295.5 t CO2e in 2020 and 390.7 t CO2e in 2021.

Analysis Results

STRECKER’s biggest emission drivers are external service providers the company uses, including HR, IT and financial services. But also emissions from employee commute and home office are significant. Emissions from electricity as well as emissions caused by the company’s customers are relatively low in comparison to other emission drivers.

Outlook

STRECKER is Committed to Reduce its own Environmental Impact

As a part of its sustainability commitment, STRECKER has already taken a variety of measures to reduce its impact, such as switching to green electricity in their office, providing employees with company bicycles, or setting up subsidies for its employee company e-car programme.

Besides that, they provide free electricity charging stations for employee cars on the business premises, and they started to use wood pellet heating as a base load boiler.
In the future, STRECKER plans to convert its vehicle fleet to e-mobility step by step.

STRECKER Takes Climate Action

Offsetting is a relevant stepping-stone to have an immediate impact on unavoidable emissions. STRECKER therefore decided to offset the company’s carbon footprint from 2020 and 2021 by supporting 5 climate projects in China, India, Argentina and Turkey.
