OSCAR is a graduate-run management consultancy based in Cologne. Their philosophy involves the continuous search for change and the pursuit of new paths and directions.
As part of its own sustainability efforts, the company works with Planetly to gain transparency about its carbon emissions and to identify effective action to reduce them over time.
OSCAR’s start-up character since 1992 is sustained by a fluctuation of 75% and the intentionally young average age of the employees. This leads to a unique knowledge and development culture for highly motivated and ambitious young professionals as well as a changing perspective through innovative solutions on existing and future challenges on the part of their clients.
Following the motto "change is the only constant", OSCAR is continuously developing and adapting to current requirements through its agile structures. Sustainability has been an important topic for OSCAR for many years - especially because OSCAR's staff always consists of the current generation of graduates and is therefore shaped by their changing characteristics. For example, the conversion to green electricity was already carried out in the past.
Together with Planetly, OSCAR wants to take its responsibility even further in the next step and act as a driving force for its customers as a carbon neutral company.
To calculate the carbon footprint, we took a closer look at all relevant activities across OSCAR’s operations. This includes not only direct and energy-related emissions (Scope 1 & 2) but also indirect emissions that occur outside the organisation (Scope 3).
The various types of emissions are calculated in CO2 equivalents (short: CO2e) to make them addable and comparable. Adding up all emissions, OSCAR had a footprint of 125.1 t CO2e in 2020/21.
OSCAR’s biggest emission drivers are external service providers the company uses, including telecommunications and IT services. Emissions related to employees, including home office and employee commuting also caused a significant amount of CO2.
To reduce emissions, OSCAR already switched its office in Cologne to green electricity and offers a ticket for public transport to all employees for a more environmentally-friendly commute.
OSCAR also introduced a home office policy across the company that allows all employees to decide whether they would like to work from home or in the office - an effective way to reduce commute-related emissions.
Moreover, OSCAR’s hardware and software equipment enables almost paperless processing. Due to this digital way of working, OSCAR saves paper.
While personal customer contact is important, OSCAR wants to be more sensitive about business trips in the future. In this way, personal customer contact should settle down to an acceptable, but purposeful level. The aware use of business trips plays a crucial role in this. Experience shows that even complex projects can be run completely remotely and do not stand in the way of the project's success. However, it should be emphasised that whenever a personal exchange is beneficial to the quality of the project, it should be preferred. In addition, the changeover to an electric fleet is being considered.
Offsetting is a relevant stepping-stone to have an immediate impact on unavoidable emissions. OSCAR therefore decided to offset the company’s carbon footprint from 2020/21 by supporting a wind energy project in Costa Rica and a rainforest protection project in Indonesia.
