Together with Planetly, HelloFresh has calculated and offset its carbon footprint: Not only emissions generated by offices and production facilities, but also the entire transport from suppliers to the consumers has been offset.
HelloFresh is the weekly guarantee for a balanced diet and the world's leading provider of meal kits. Sustainability is part of the company's DNA: For the meal kits, HelloFresh selects food as regionally and sustainably as possible and delivers precise pre-portioned ingredients. Doing so, HelloFresh avoids food waste. In addition, the carbon emissions of operations and services for energy, delivery, website, app and server, as well as for all packaging were calculated by Planetly and offset by climate action projects. All projects are selected according to the highest standards (VCS, REDD+, CCBA).
Planetly is a strong partner of HelloFresh for their carbon management and supports the company in reducing and offsetting carbon emissions, so that HelloFresh is now carbon neutral. The calculation of the carbon footprint was additionally audited and certified by TÜV Rheinland.
Until the meal kits reach the customer, unavoidable emissions will of course occur. We had a closer look at them. The largest share of HelloFresh's carbon footprint is caused by transporting the finished boxes to the customers. The good news is that HelloFresh's logistics partners already offset emissions, so some transport is already carbon neutral. However, we still record them to get a comprehensive overview of all climate-relevant processes along the supply chain.
Emissions from food packaging are also playing into the carbon footprint. Here, HelloFresh is already working hard to offer the most environmentally friendly options possible without compromising on the quality of the products. HelloFresh is offsetting the emissions from the production while further reducing packaging.
Adding up all emissions from transport, processing, packaging, IT and office operations results in a carbon footprint of around 13,619 tonnes, which HelloFresh offsets with Planetly.
HelloFresh produces emissions across their operations: Starting with the transport from the suppliers to the use of the app by the customers.
For their carbon footprint calculation, we did not only look at the part that occurs directly in the company. Emissions from logistics and packaging usually occur at other companies, such as the manufacturers of the packaging materials and the freight forwarders. However, since they also depend on HelloFresh using the products and services, they were also included in the calculations to show HelloFresh’s comprehensive footprint. We are particularly proud that TÜV Rheinland has audited and certified this comprehensive calculation.
The result of Planetly's analysis is the sum of HelloFresh's operational emissions from July 1, 2020 to June 30, 2021, which we calculated based on data from the first quarter of 2020 and extrapolated for the year.
Why did we calculate ahead? Because HelloFresh has already started offsetting all emissions for the mentioned period. To ensure that the forecast aligns with HelloFresh's actual footprint and is sufficiently offset, we recalculate at the end of the year. HelloFresh has been committed to climate action projects since the beginning of the year. Together with Planetly, HelloFresh has calculated the company emissions of Scope 1 and 2 - direct and indirect energy generation - as well as office operations, business travel and deliveries to customers and started offsetting for the entire year. As of July 2020, the company is going one step further: Now HelloFresh is also offsetting emissions from packaging, transportation from suppliers to customers, as well as the carbon footprint of employee commute, printing materials, app, website and server emissions.
Offsetting is part of HelloFresh's sustainability program. In the next step, HelloFresh will continue the calculation in the Planetly software and thus track developments and discover saving potential in real time.

HelloFresh plans to continue working to reduce its emissions and is already working on specific initiatives such as increasing production efficiency and switching to renewable energy. Starting in January 2021, the company will switch to 100% green electricity at its production site in Verden, Germany.
In addition, HelloFresh is pursuing the goal, together with Planetly, of tracking the sources of emissions along its value chain in an automated and real-time manner. This data-driven approach provides HelloFresh with important information on possible actions to reduce its carbon footprint step by step.
Through Planetly, HelloFresh received a wide selection of possible offset projects. The company chose to support three projects: A methane capture project in the Netherlands and two reforestation projects in Switzerland and Peru. It was important for HelloFresh to take responsibility for its direct area of action.
Agriculture contributes up to 14 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions. Accordingly, the focus was on climate action initiatives that contribute to improve agricultural practices. At the project site in the Netherlands, manure from pig farming is fermented and converted into biogas, which is used to generate renewable energy. The process avoids the uncontrolled generation of the greenhouse gas methane and thus counteracts climate change.
In addition to the approach of avoiding greenhouse gas emissions at source, HelloFresh has chosen reforestation projects that bind carbon dioxide from the air into soils and biomass and protect ecosystems. In Peru, HelloFresh supports the Alto Mayo Protected Area, which plays a central role in the conservation of local flora and fauna. The REDD+ project in Alto Mayo has been able to reduce deforestation by 75 percent. And in Switzerland, a protected area in the canton of Schwyz ensures sustainable forest management that preserves natural biodiversity and strengthens the forest's ability to function as a carbon dioxide sink.
